Entwerfen mit System
Studienhefte Problemorientiertes Design | Heft #10
Systematic design methods played a significant role in design discourse and practice around 1960. In movements such as the Design Methods Movement and the Creativity Movement, scientific and rational approaches were applied to design processes. The goal was to generate products, ideas, and inventions in an equally systematic manner. At the same time, a shift toward systems and systematic design methods can also be observed in the arts.
Claudia Mareis and Michael Rottmann explore this historical phenomenon in their article. They explore the extent to which the postwar discourse on creativity and methodology originating in the United States, on the one hand, promoted the equating of creativity with (supposed) productivity, and, on the other hand, how the media-related constraints and limitations of systematic design methods in the fields of design and art were reflected upon and critiqued.
