Berliner Bäume. Eine Bestandsaufnahme
Architektur in Gebrauch | Heft #8
AG8 documents the condition of Berlin’s street trees along a roughly five-kilometer stretch around Park am Gleisdreieck. The street tree registry lists 440 trees for this section. In this report, 98 trees are documented through photographs as damaged, dead, or felled—twelve of which are no longer listed in the registry. Nevertheless, the photographs show only the most obvious damage. Invisible or inconspicuous damage—such as trunk rot or crown thinning that is difficult to capture in images—is not recorded. The reason for this documentation is the visible damage to the trees resulting from long-term declines in precipitation and groundwater levels—a trend that has intensified particularly since the so-called “drought summer” of 2018. The photos and cadastral data in this issue are from fall 2019. AG8 includes two interviews with Felix Weisbrich, head of the Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg Street and Green Space Office, and Christoph Schaaf, former deputy head of the Tiergarten Green Space Office.
