An Architektur 16
Material on: David Harvey, Flexible Accumulation through Urbanization
David Harvey interprets the postmodern architecture of the 1980s as a cultural expression of post-Fordism and thus of the crisis facing American cities at the time. By introducing two new developments into the discussion about cities and relating them to one another, he insists that discourses and cultural practices cannot be separated from economic and political processes: the architectural phenomenon of postmodernism and the economic project of flexible accumulation must be read together.

Material on: Manuel Castells, The City and the Grassroots
The City and the Grassroots analyzes developments and changes in the city as the result of a conflict-ridden process of urban social movements. Manuel Castells introduces the struggles of local protest groups, citizens’ initiatives, alternative communities, and grassroots democratic movements into urban research as productive forces of urban change. Building on a Marxist perspective of the city, he constructs an open and adaptable model of the built environment as a crossroads of social struggles.
The key chapters of the book are translated into German here for the first time.
